A walk from school to Preston Cemetery. The children’s mission here was to locate the graves of several WW1 soldiers and WW2 air raid victims, record the details featured on the headstones and where appropriate take a gravestone rubbing using paper and wax crayons.
Preston is a beautiful, planned cemetery with much of it preserved mature woodland and nature reserve. It is also huge! The children and their adult helpers did very well to find at least one of their allotted 2 per group graves. The details on the stones were recorded fully and some excellent rubbings were taken. These may well form the basis of a project art display.
We congregated at the burial site of many of the victims of the Wilkinson’s Air Raid in 1941. We found the resting place of Mrs Oliver who lived next to the school and died in the shelter.
The children were very well behaved and respectful throughout. Well done!
